FAQ

Q: I have never taken piano lessons before. Can I still join 'Round Midnight?
A: Yes. Regardless of your age or musical abilities, you are always welcome. The only thing we ask for as a pre-requisite is that you come in with great motivation and a great love for music.

Q: Will I need to buy a series of books in order to learn how to play the piano?
A: Although books will be used there is no specific book system you will need to buy. Each student will receive a custom made program based on their goals and this may include purchasing a specific book from time to time, but you will not be forced to buy a group of books before you start.

A great example of this would be a student who might be learning how to improvise and feels that a specific book on improvisation might help with their studies. At that point a book would be recommended.

Q: Do I have to take lessons at 'Round Midnight's studio or can I have a teacher teach me in my home on my personal instrument?
A: Both options are available to every student and can be mixed and matched as desired by the student. It is very common to have a teacher give lessons at the home of a student as well as at the 'Round Midnight studio.

Q: Are there group lessons? If not, why not?
A: Group lessons are not offered. They are not offered because since each musician has their own specific needs, it becomes almost impossible to give the attention to each student that is necessary to properly teach music in a group environment, even if the group was made up of only two students.

The only exception would be in a band situation. From time to time groups of musicians who wish to play together can receive instruction as a band where the focus becomes the performance of the band and repetoire of the band and not of the individual musician learning their specific instrument.

Q: Can I learn to play any kind of music, or will I be stuck to learning music I really don't like or want to play?
A: As mentioned, each student will receive a tailor made program based on their personal goals and this includes the kind of music they want to play. It is true that some traditional techniques can only be taught by looking back at music in a historical sense, but this would not make up the majority of the program.
